Plural Information - General Plurality
Fronting & Switching
Can two or more people Front or take control at one time?
Yes. This is usually called co-Fronting.
Can Fronting be taught? Also does co-Fronting have to be taught?
Some groups can tell if a person will be good at Fronting by how they handle using the body on their own. This can be done in a safe place - usually sitting or laying down in the beginning. Knowing body history information is a big plus. What can also help is getting them accustomed to the idea of being in a new place and possibly using a body that isn't their own. That can take awhile to get used to. It isn't every day that you jump out of your own world and land into another.
What is the difference between switching and (mental) shifting?
Switching is a 'hard change', while Shifting is a 'soft change'. A hard change is a change of one person to another. While a soft change is a single person becoming something else. It all depends on the language someone prefers.
From a Plural perspective, Switching and Shifting can refer to when people change at the front, or change who is controlling the body. For instance, I might say: "Harry and I have been shifting all day." That probably means we were both taking turns using the body. And not meaning that we were actually changing our physical forms into something else. (Though I would more than likely actually say, "Harry and I have been switching all day.")
From personal experience, a Plural switching or shifting usually means that person literally arrives into the body, and then leaves the body. It isn't actually a mental shift. Then again, we come from a metaphysical/gateway type of dynamic where we believe we came from places outside of the body. So that could create varying difference you might come across. Some believe they are literally leaving the body, while another may believe their shared mind is shifting into another person.
A Median might consider themselves a Plural version of a mental shifter, based on just how connected they are with one another. It could feel like one is putting on a mask.
Where do people who don't have a head-space go when they aren't Fronting?
Good question. Perhaps some people fall asleep or 'shut off' without any memories until they return to the Front.
Is it normal to experience pain while switching?
It's possible someone might have pain while switching, but it isn't the usual. Headaches have been common.
If someone else does front, what will happen to me? Will I still be sort of present? Will I know what's going on? Or is it different for everyone?
It is definitely different for everyone.
1. Some people step back into a headspace
2. Some are only vaguely aware of what else happens with the body
3. Some may fall into a temporary sleep or not recall what they were doing during the time someone else was fronting
Is there a term for a group where only one person (the 'core') fronts at all times?
Not specifically. In some instances this is the case for Median groups, though not always. A group could be a Gateway and still have one person stuck at the front. The changing or not-changing of fronters doesn't determine what type of Plural group they may be.
Yes. This is usually called co-Fronting.
